Public Warned Not to Approach Escaped Capybara from Shropshire Zoo

Zookeepers Issue Urgent Appeal After Animal Breaks Out of Enclosure

Shropshire County Council has issued an urgent appeal to the public after a capybara escaped from its enclosure at West Midland Safari Park on Wednesday, August 10th, 2023.

The animal, named "Coco," is a semi-aquatic rodent weighing approximately 130 pounds. It is native to South America and is known for its calm and docile nature.

What to Do If You See Coco

Zookeepers have advised the public not to approach Coco if they see it. While the animal is not considered dangerous, it is still a wild creature and may become frightened or aggressive if cornered.

If you spot Coco, it is important to:

  • Stay calm and do not approach the animal.
  • Note the location and report it to the zoo or local authorities immediately, providing as much detail as possible.
  • Keep a safe distance and observe the animal's behavior. Do not attempt to chase or capture it.

Search and Recovery Efforts

Zookeepers and local authorities are currently searching for Coco. They are using drones, thermal imaging, and tracking dogs to locate the animal.

The zoo has set up a dedicated hotline for the public to report any sightings or information about Coco's whereabouts. The hotline number is 01299 404040.

Additional Information

Capybaras are the largest living rodents and can live for up to 10 years in the wild. They are herbivores and feed on grasses, aquatic plants, and fruits.

While rare, capybaras have been known to escape from captivity in the past. In 2021, a capybara named "Hank" escaped from a zoo in California and spent several weeks on the loose before being safely recaptured.

The public is reminded that it is illegal to harbor or interfere with an escaped zoo animal. Anyone with information about Coco's whereabouts is urged to contact the zoo or local authorities immediately.
